Ces microcanaux se sont av\u00e9r\u00e9s tr\u00e8s utiles depuis plusieurs d\u00e9cennies pour r\u00e9aliser de v\u00e9ritables \u00ab\u00a0laboratoires sur puces\u00a0\u00bb, dans lesquels circulent des fluides que l&rsquo;on va utiliser pour transporter des mol\u00e9cules en solution ou des suspensions de petits objets de nature diverse (cellules biologiques, microparticules, etc.). Ils permettent ainsi de r\u00e9aliser des op\u00e9rations de transport, de m\u00e9lange ou de s\u00e9paration, d&rsquo;un grand int\u00e9r\u00eat en g\u00e9nie chimique, en biologie ou en m\u00e9decine (synth\u00e8se de mol\u00e9cules, tri cellulaire, identification d&rsquo;agents biologiques, lecteur de glyc\u00e9mie, etc.). Cependant, les actions de contr\u00f4le de ces \u00e9coulements, comme la fermeture et l&rsquo;ouverture d&rsquo;une branche ou le changement de sens et de d\u00e9bit, reposent en g\u00e9n\u00e9ral sur des parties fixes ou mobiles pilot\u00e9es par des dispositifs ext\u00e9rieurs \u00e0 la puce, ce qui constitue un s\u00e9rieux frein au d\u00e9veloppement de cette technologie.
